Our first Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Spring 2026 in the amount of $1,000 is awarded to Maya Knight. Maya is currently in her second semester at the University of Oklahoma, where she began her studies in Fall 2025. She has been accepted into the university’s Air Force ROTC program and plans to serve her country following graduation. Maya is also a proud member of Alpha Chi Omega. Maya is a former client of the firm, and we are proud to support her as she continues her college journey. Congratulations, Maya. Boomer Sooner!

Our second Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Spring 2026 in the amount of $1,000 is awarded to Megan Echegaray. Megan is a junior at the University of Oklahoma pursuing a double major in Sports Business and Marketing and Legal Studies. Her goal is to attend law school and become a sports agent. She currently works with the OU Athletics Department and serves as the lead of the marketing team for the upcoming spring Softball season. Megan also serves as the Director of Diversity for the Alpha Phi sorority. This scholarship will help support Megan as she continues to gain hands-on experience and pursue her academic and professional goals. Congratulations, Megan!

Our third Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Spring 2026 in the amount of $1,000 is awarded to Paige Knight. Paige is beginning her final semester at the University of Arkansas, where she is studying education with a focus on special needs for Pre-K through 3rd grade. Her passion for working with children with special needs has guided her academic journey, and she looks forward to starting her teaching career following graduation in Summer 2026. This scholarship will help support Paige as she completes her education and begins preparing for her future classroom. Paige is a current client of the firm, and we are proud to support her as she enters the final chapter of her college journey. Congratulations, Paige. Woo Pig!

Our fourth Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Spring 2026 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Hope Adler. She is pursuing her Associate of Science degree at Collin College and looks forward to transferring to a four-year university to continue her education. As a Legal Assistant at Burress Injury Law, she brings dedication to everything she does. Her ambition and commitment make her an outstanding recipient of this scholarship. Congratulations, Hope. Our fifth Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Spring 2026 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Courtney Veal. Courtney is going into her second semester at Texas Tech University, where she is studying Finance and excited to continue building her academic and professional skills. She looks forward to pursuing opportunities such as internships and other experiences that will help her grow and prepare for her future career. Courtney is connected to the firm through North Texas Elite Services, where her uncle has been a longtime friend of our founder. She also contributes her time to the Burress Community Foundation, helping support the foundation’s mission and initiatives. Gavin is a student at the University of Mississippi, where he is pursuing his goal of becoming a lawyer. Our seventh Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Spring 2026, in the amount of $2,500, is awarded to Hannah Walk. Hannah is the daughter of Jason’s longtime friend of over 20 years, who has been a tremendous referral partner for the firm. She is currently attending the Savannah College of Art and Design, where she is majoring in Themed Entertainment Design. Hannah has been named to the Chancellor’s List, earning her recognition as a two-time Friends of the Firm Scholarship recipient. Her creativity, vision, and passion for bringing joy to others make her an exceptional recipient of this scholarship. Congratulations, Hannah! Our first Underdog Scholarship Recipient for Spring 2026, in the amount of $5,000, is awarded to Colt Ashby! Colt has faced incredible challenges in his life. After the passing of his 9-year-old brother, Judd, from a rare form of spinal cancer, Colt quickly took on new responsibilities at home while continuing to excel in school. He has shown remarkable resilience and maturity, balancing personal loss, family changes, and the pressures of adolescence with determination and faith. Through his experiences, Colt found his passion for mechanical engineering, motivated by his brother’s memory and guided by supportive teachers and mentors. We are proud to support him as he continues his college career at Texas Tech University, where he looks forward to advancing his engineering studies. Congratulations, Colt. We can’t wait to see all you accomplish!

Our second Underdog Scholarship Recipient for Spring 2026, in the amount of $2,500, is awarded to Aubrey Nizigiyimana! Aubrey spent years chasing his dream of playing Division I soccer, earning top honors and a college offer through his hard work and dedication. After a devastating shoulder injury ended his playing career, he chose to turn that setback into purpose. Now, he inspires others through coaching youth soccer and helping young athletes build confidence and resilience. We are proud to support him as he continues his education at the University of Georgia. Congratulations, Aubrey. We can’t wait to see all you accomplish!

Our third Underdog Scholarship Recipient for Spring 2026, in the amount of $2,500, is awarded to NyJada Baker! NyJada showed extraordinary courage and selflessness when she chose to donate a kidney to her father, helping save his health and allowing him to complete a 20-year career in the U.S. Army. While balancing college, recovery from surgery, and a major life transition, she continued to show strength, perseverance, and commitment to something bigger than herself. We are proud to support NyJada as she continues her education at Texas Southern University and carries forward the resilience and compassion that define her story. Congratulations, NyJada!

Our 1st Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Fall 2025 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Aidan Hennessy!
Aidan has faced adversity from a young age as he grew up watching his grandmother battle emphysema, a disease that changed her life and deeply affected his own. Instead of letting those challenges hold him back, he turned them into motivation. He dedicated himself to learning about her condition, sought out new treatments that could improve her health, and supported her through each difficult step. His determination gave him a front row seat to her resilience and also taught him how to be resilient himself.

Our 2nd Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Fall 2025 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Elizabeth Stewart!
She faced the challenges of growing up as a military kid, moving frequently, and living far from family. Her strength was tested when she was diagnosed with leukemia at the end of her freshman year while living in Seoul, South Korea. During a long and difficult chemotherapy treatment, she stayed focused on school, leaned on her family for support, and pushed through each obstacle. She celebrated important milestones along the way, including the moment she rang the bell to mark the end of 28 months of treatment. Elizabeth is now studying Health Professions and Clinical Science!

Our 3rd Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Fall 2025 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Gavin Meagher!
Gavin’s sophomore year of high school changed dramatically when he began experiencing unpredictable seizures. They kept him from driving, playing sports he loved, and fully participating in everyday activities. For almost two years, he managed treatments, dietary changes, and countless doctor visits, all while keeping up with school and extracurriculars. Despite the setbacks and frustrations, Gavin never let his condition define him. He pushed forward, stayed involved with his baseball team, and celebrated milestones like earning the Heart Award and the Presidential Award for over 400 hours of service.
Way to go, Gavin! Boomer Sooner!

Our 4th Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Fall 2025 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Quillen Shields!
From a young age, medical challenges have been an unpredictable part of her life. Born with Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), she has spent countless hours in hospitals, learning to manage procedures, monitor her condition, and advocate for her own health. During junior year, a sudden heart complication coincided with important AP exams, forcing her to adjust her plans and push through recovery while staying committed to schoolwork. These experiences taught her that setbacks are part of life, and moving forward despite obstacles is what truly matters. Her resilience and determination have shaped her passion for AI-focused cybersecurity, where foresight, trust, and proactive problem solving mirror the lessons learned from managing her own health. She is now studying Cybersecurity at Florida Polytechnic University.

Bailey is a repeat recipient of this scholarship, earning this recognition once again due to her exceptional academic performance, with a cumulative GPA of 3.9. Bailey is also the daughter of one of our valued teammates, Julie. She will be a sophomore at The University of Texas at Austin, where she is studying Exercise Science and plans to pursue a Master’s in Athletic Training. Our 4th Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Fall 2025, in the amount of $2,500, is awarded to Katherine Mathieu! Katherine is the daughter of Audrey Mathieu, a longtime friend of Jason who periodically works with the firm. She will be attending Yale University on a pre-med track to become a pediatrician specializing in developmental disabilities. Katherine’s passion for this career path began after an injury sidelined her during gym class, where she formed a bond with a nonverbal, wheelchair-bound classmate. Playing catch together each day showed Katherine the power of kindness and opened her eyes to the impact she could make by removing barriers for children with disabilities. Her commitment to serving others through research, community service, and collaboration makes her an outstanding recipient of this scholarship. Congratulations, Katherine! Grace is from Allen, TX, and is attending the University of North Texas, where she is pursuing a degree in Interior Design. Grace is also the sister of one of our valued teammates, Lauren. Our 6th Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Fall 2025, in the amount of $1,000, is awarded to Kennady Hughes! Kennady is from Dallas, TX, and has been accepted into the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, class of 2029, where she plans to major in Finance. Kennady’s journey reflects years of dedication. She has completed over 250 volunteer hours through National Charity League and recently joined the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, where she looks forward to building friendships and connections during her time at UT. Our 7th Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Fall 2025, in the amount of $2,500, is awarded to Klaire Hines! Klaire is from Trophy Club, TX, and is attending Texas Tech University, where she plans to study Sports PR and Communications. Our 8th Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Fall 2025, in the amount of $1,000, is awarded to Brock Bernal! Brock has been an active part of the firm’s events, working various functions including the Burress Law Christmas Party and the 2022, 2023, and 2024 Burress Injury Law Charity Picnics. He is currently attending TCU, where he is pursuing a double major in Health Science and Business Management. Our First Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2025 for $5,000 is awarded to Parker Shubin! Despite facing overwhelming challenges since being diagnosed with a brain tumor at just five years old, Parker has shown incredible resilience and determination. With 19 surgeries, including 14 brain surgeries, he continues to excel academically. We are proud to support his journey and future in healthcare at UCLA!

Our Second Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2025 for $5,000 is awarded to Savannah Donaghue! Savannah has faced serious health challenges, including heart failure caused by a rare heart defect. After undergoing a 10-hour surgery, during which she flatlined three times, Savannah came through with the help of 23 medical professionals. Following a long recovery, she received the news that she was officially out of heart failure. Her strength through it all was inspired by her grandmother, who taught her to never give up. Now, Savannah is studying Secondary Education at Idaho State University and hopes to become a teacher who can inspire and support students the way her teachers did for her. We are proud to support Savannah as she works to make a positive impact on future generations!

Our Third Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2025 for $2,500 is awarded to Ella Stiso! Ella was born with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder that left her with limited use of her legs. After years of surgeries and physical therapy, Ella overcame immense physical challenges. Through her journey, she discovered the power of giving back. Ella joined The Seeing Eye program to raise guide dogs for the blind, and her experience helping others inspired her to pursue a career in law. She now plans to become a disability attorney, advocating for better policies and opportunities for those with physical limitations. Ella is currently studying at the University of Alabama, where she is working toward her goal of making a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing similar challenges. Best wishes, Ella!

Our Fourth Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2025 for $2,500 is awarded to Madison Harvey! Madison’s journey with Papillary Thyroid Cancer has been one of strength and resilience. After her treatment, she faced physical and emotional challenges, but she worked hard to overcome them and rebuild her life. Through everything, Madison learned to appreciate life and push past obstacles. She became National Honor Society President, co-founded her school’s Business Professionals of America chapter, and focused on helping others who were going through tough times. Now, 20 months cancer-free, Madison is pursuing her education at the University of South Carolina. Her journey has helped to develop her into a person who faces challenges head-on, lives life to the fullest, and is driven to make a positive impact on others! Go Madison!

Our First Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Fall 2024 for $2,500 is awarded to McKinney North graduate, Chelsea Williams! Chelsea has faced the challenges of Misophonia, a rare disorder, and turned those struggles into strengths. Her determination has helped her overcome tough times. We are rooting for you, Chelsea! This fall, Chelsea will be attending Oklahoma State University!

Our Second Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Fall 2024 for $2,500 is awarded to Addison Raffle! Addison followed her Grandfather’s example by turning challenges into opportunities to help others. Despite dealing with a serious kidney condition, Addison raised significant funds for Special Olympics and worked to make school more inclusive for everyone. This fall, Addison will be attending University of Michigan!

Our Third Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Fall 2024 for $2,500 is awarded to Rosa Davi! Rosa’s ability to keep going despite losing her father is inspiring. With her mother’s advice to "Be the light in someone’s darkness," Rosa is now using her own experiences to help and uplift others. We’re rooting for you, Rosa! This fall, Rosa will be attending The College of New Jersey!

Our Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Fall 2024 in the amount of $1,000 is awarded to Rose Duncan! This is Rose's second scholarship from our firm, awarded to recipients who achieve the Dean’s List for the semester after becoming a scholarship recipient. Rose is the daughter of Matt Duncan, who served as Burress Injury Law’s original banker from 2008 to 2012. Matt continues to support the firm in his role as Executive Vice President at Independent Financial. Rose, a long-time friend of the firm, often joins her father and Jason at SMU Football games. She is a graduate of Trinity Christian Academy and is now a sophomore at SMU. In addition to her academic pursuits, Rose is also an exceptionally talented artist!

Our Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Fall 2024 in the amount of $1,000 is awarded to Charlotte Hamann! Charlotte is a ManeGait volunteer and has volunteered in support of our annual Burress Injury Law Family Picnic! She has worked with over 130 children with disabilities through school programs and as a volunteer, which shaped her passion for serving others. This fall, she will be studying Kinesiology and Neuroscience at Texas A&M, aiming for a Doctorate in Occupational Therapy!

Our Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Fall 2024 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Curt Fendley! Jason is Curt's godfather. Curt’s dad, Clifton Fendley, and Jason have been best friends for almost 40 years. Growing up, Curt was surrounded by community leaders in his family, which inspired his passion for helping others. He has always aspired to be an attorney and has worked diligently in leadership, community service, and academics to make that dream a reality. Regarding community service, Curt has been very active in Paris with many service organizations, including years volunteer work with The Boys & Girls Club of Paris. Congratulations, Curt!

Our First Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2024 for $2,500 is awarded to Diane Le! In 2020, Diane lost a close family member due to family violence. She began attending therapy and learned the importance of therapists/counselors and how they can help people regain their mental health. The experience made such a tremendous impact on Diane that she is working to become a licensed professional counselor. We’re pulling for you, Diane!

Our Second Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2024 for $2,500 is awarded to Sydney Borchardt! At 10 years old, Sydney was diagnosed with scoliosis. To reduce her curvature she had to wear a back brace 23 hours a day, travel to Wisconsin every 6 months and did specialized scoliosis exercises and yoga everyday. She ultimately had significant spinal surgery to help her condition. Sydney started a support group called Curvy Girls, which provides other girls with similar conditions emotional support, advice, and a safe space to express themselves. The group makes gift bags and blankets for children having spinal surgery at OU Children’s. Sydney was chosen as 2021-2022 Shriners National Patient Ambassador and spent the year traveling the country. Sydney plans to become an occupational therapist and help kids that need extra support in their lives!

Our Third Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2024 for $2,500 is awarded to McKinney High graduate, Sarah Doshier! Sarah’s dad passed away when she was ten years old, and then her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was a sophomore in high school. These hardships inspired her to grow her faith with God and overcome her challenges with mental health. Sarah attends A&M University and maintains a 4.0 GPA!

Our 4th Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2024 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Emily Watson! At age 11, Emily’s mother suffered a very significant personal injury that restricted her ability to work and limited her ability to even be a homemaker. This meant Emily had to step up and assume a much larger responsibility around the home and helping to take care of her mother. Emily now attends Tarleton State University and studies agriculture!

Our 5th Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2024 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Emily Knerr! At 6 years old Emily was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer, with a 96% mortality rate. She received significant treatment and initially overcame the cancer. Just before her 13th birthday, she relapsed. For a third time at age 18, while she was getting ready to leave home to attend the University of Alabama, doctors found another tumor. Emily has undergone 7 abdominal surgeries. She is now a Junior at the University of Alabama, where she is studying to become a Child Life Specialist!

Our Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Spring 2024 in the amount of $1,000 is awarded to Rose Duncan! Rose is the daughter of Matt Duncan, Burress Law’s original banker between 2008-2012. To this day, Matt assists the firm from time to time as an Executive Vice President of Independent Financial. Matt’s very talented daughter, Rose, has been a friend of the firm for many years and typically sits next to Matt and Jason at SMU Football games. Rose is a graduate of Trinity Christian Academy and is a Freshman at SMU. Additionally, Rose is an amazing artist!

Our First Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Fall 2023 for $2,500 is awarded to Adem Byrdsell!
In 2021, Adem was involved in a major crash and suffered a traumatic brain injury, C5 spinal fracture, bruised lungs, fractured sternum, and fractured ribs.
After the accident, Byrdsell wanted to help underprivileged teems who play sports where he grew up in Liberia. He created "Byrd Basketball Foundation", which is a non-profit organization. In 2022, the Foundation fully sponsored a basketball camp for underprivileged youth in Liberia.
The accident inspired him to study Kinesiology at the College of Charleston, and he plans to become a Sports Medicine Doctor!

Our Second Fall 2023 Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for $2,500 is awarded to McKinney's own, Presley Hazelwood! Presley was born with Arthrogryposis, which affects her feet, legs, and hip. She has endured 10 surgeries, has 9 screws in her hip, and wears ankle/foot orthotics. As a result of receiving such involved, quality medical care, it became important for Presley to help others. She and her parents have hosted an annual golf tournament for years to share Presley's story and raise money for Scottish Rite, the children's hospital that provided her medical care. One of Presley's goals is to become a pediatric nurse and help kids just like her.

At age 11, Sarah was diagnosed with acute lymphatic leukemia which isolated her from all the things she loved such as friends, school, sports, and church. Although she had to endure incredible hurdles at such a young age, she has made the very best of her circumstances while maintaining a positive attitude.
Sarah’s life-changing diagnosis and the quality of medical care she received led her to want to become a nurse. She hopes to build a welcoming environment for patients just as her nurses created for her!

Our Fourth Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Fall 2023 for $2,500 is awarded to Abigail Klein!
Abigail has persevered through and overcome challenges related to mental health. She is planning to become a therapist through her studies at the University of North Texas to improve the mental health of others.

Our Fifth Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Fall 2023 for $5,000 is awarded to Taylor Canon!

Our First Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2023 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Adam Kurth! Adam has a 3.74 GPA, and is a student at Arizona State University. In High School, he was diagnosed with PSC. During his liver transplant, the surgeons discovered his liver was half cancerous, causing him to endure chemotherapy. A few years later, an immunologist took an interest in his case and performed a genetic test, resulting in a diagnosis of CVID, which requires a bone marrow transplant to cure. Adam had his surgery on December 12, 2022, and although he has a long recovery, he looks forward to eventually earning a Ph.D. in statistics!

Our Second Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2023 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Megan Berger! Megan is a survivor of human trafficking. Fortunately, she was able to escape at 24 years old.
She then went to school and graduated from the EMT program at the College of Marin, and works as an EMT while also doing freelance private investigation work.
Megan also owns a business that provides needed information to the community about crime, safety, and social issues like addiction and homelessness.
Megan is now studying administrative and juvenile justice at Santa Rosa Junior College to better serve her community!

Our Third Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2023 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Connor Addison!
When Connor was starting high school, he noticed his eyesight was worsening. He failed his vision test for his drivers permit and within months, became legally blind. Subsequently, Connor endured two eye surgeries in 2018. Though he still has vision problems, the corrective surgeries helped him. Connor is grateful for the vision he regained and we are inspired by how this young man has overcome adversity!
Connor is now studying in finance at The University of Mount Union!

Our Fourth Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2023 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Nathan Eller!
As a high school student, Nathan’s dream was to play college football and violin. During his junior year, however, doctors discovered a cancerous mass in his chest. Although his plans changed, Nathan is a healthy cancer survivor and is grateful for his journey.
Because of his experience, he is studying at Seattle University to become an ultrasound technologist to help others.
Nathan received a Burress Injury Law Scholarship last semester. Because he has actively rooted for our firm on social media while also earning a 3.9 GPA last semester, Nathan is the second student to receive a second Underdog scholarship!

Our Fifth Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2023 in the amount of $5,000 is awarded to Rylee Kahler!
Last year, a fire burned Rylee’s family home. Tragically, her mother died from the fire.
Thereafter, Rylee has persevered through incredible heartbreak and adversity. She works several jobs and also paints to fund her secondary education, and ended the year with a 4.0 GPA.
Rylee is studying psychology at Allegheny College and plans to become a clinical psychologist!

Our First Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2025 for $5,000 is awarded to Parker Shubin! Despite facing overwhelming challenges since being diagnosed with a brain tumor at just five years old, Parker has shown incredible resilience and determination. With 19 surgeries, including 14 brain surgeries, he continues to excel academically. We are proud to support his journey and future in healthcare at UCLA!

Our Second Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2025 for $5,000 is awarded to Savannah Donaghue! Savannah has faced serious health challenges, including heart failure caused by a rare heart defect. After undergoing a 10-hour surgery, during which she flatlined three times, Savannah came through with the help of 23 medical professionals. Following a long recovery, she received the news that she was officially out of heart failure. Her strength through it all was inspired by her grandmother, who taught her to never give up. Now, Savannah is studying Secondary Education at Idaho State University and hopes to become a teacher who can inspire and support students the way her teachers did for her. We are proud to support Savannah as she works to make a positive impact on future generations!

Our Third Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2025 for $2,500 is awarded to Ella Stiso! Ella was born with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder that left her with limited use of her legs. After years of surgeries and physical therapy, Ella overcame immense physical challenges. Through her journey, she discovered the power of giving back. Ella joined The Seeing Eye program to raise guide dogs for the blind, and her experience helping others inspired her to pursue a career in law. She now plans to become a disability attorney, advocating for better policies and opportunities for those with physical limitations. Ella is currently studying at the University of Alabama, where she is working toward her goal of making a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing similar challenges. Best wishes, Ella!

Our Fourth Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2025 for $2,500 is awarded to Madison Harvey! Madison’s journey with Papillary Thyroid Cancer has been one of strength and resilience. After her treatment, she faced physical and emotional challenges, but she worked hard to overcome them and rebuild her life. Through everything, Madison learned to appreciate life and push past obstacles. She became National Honor Society President, co-founded her school’s Business Professionals of America chapter, and focused on helping others who were going through tough times. Now, 20 months cancer-free, Madison is pursuing her education at the University of South Carolina. Her journey has helped to develop her into a person who faces challenges head-on, lives life to the fullest, and is driven to make a positive impact on others! Go Madison!

Our First Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Fall 2024 for $2,500 is awarded to McKinney North graduate, Chelsea Williams! Chelsea has faced the challenges of Misophonia, a rare disorder, and turned those struggles into strengths. Her determination has helped her overcome tough times. We are rooting for you, Chelsea! This fall, Chelsea will be attending Oklahoma State University!

Our Second Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Fall 2024 for $2,500 is awarded to Addison Raffle! Addison followed her Grandfather’s example by turning challenges into opportunities to help others. Despite dealing with a serious kidney condition, Addison raised significant funds for Special Olympics and worked to make school more inclusive for everyone. This fall, Addison will be attending University of Michigan!

Our Third Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Fall 2024 for $2,500 is awarded to Rosa Davi! Rosa’s ability to keep going despite losing her father is inspiring. With her mother’s advice to "Be the light in someone’s darkness," Rosa is now using her own experiences to help and uplift others. We’re rooting for you, Rosa! This fall, Rosa will be attending The College of New Jersey!

Our Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Fall 2024 in the amount of $1,000 is awarded to Rose Duncan! This is Rose's second scholarship from our firm, awarded to recipients who achieve the Dean’s List for the semester after becoming a scholarship recipient. Rose is the daughter of Matt Duncan, who served as Burress Injury Law’s original banker from 2008 to 2012. Matt continues to support the firm in his role as Executive Vice President at Independent Financial. Rose, a long-time friend of the firm, often joins her father and Jason at SMU Football games. She is a graduate of Trinity Christian Academy and is now a sophomore at SMU. In addition to her academic pursuits, Rose is also an exceptionally talented artist!

Our Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Fall 2024 in the amount of $1,000 is awarded to Charlotte Hamann! Charlotte is a ManeGait volunteer and has volunteered in support of our annual Burress Injury Law Family Picnic! She has worked with over 130 children with disabilities through school programs and as a volunteer, which shaped her passion for serving others. This fall, she will be studying Kinesiology and Neuroscience at Texas A&M, aiming for a Doctorate in Occupational Therapy!

Our Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Fall 2024 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Curt Fendley! Jason is Curt's godfather. Curt’s dad, Clifton Fendley, and Jason have been best friends for almost 40 years. Growing up, Curt was surrounded by community leaders in his family, which inspired his passion for helping others. He has always aspired to be an attorney and has worked diligently in leadership, community service, and academics to make that dream a reality. Regarding community service, Curt has been very active in Paris with many service organizations, including years volunteer work with The Boys & Girls Club of Paris. Congratulations, Curt!

Our First Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2024 for $2,500 is awarded to Diane Le! In 2020, Diane lost a close family member due to family violence. She began attending therapy and learned the importance of therapists/counselors and how they can help people regain their mental health. The experience made such a tremendous impact on Diane that she is working to become a licensed professional counselor. We’re pulling for you, Diane!

Our Second Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2024 for $2,500 is awarded to Sydney Borchardt! At 10 years old, Sydney was diagnosed with scoliosis. To reduce her curvature she had to wear a back brace 23 hours a day, travel to Wisconsin every 6 months and did specialized scoliosis exercises and yoga everyday. She ultimately had significant spinal surgery to help her condition. Sydney started a support group called Curvy Girls, which provides other girls with similar conditions emotional support, advice, and a safe space to express themselves. The group makes gift bags and blankets for children having spinal surgery at OU Children’s. Sydney was chosen as 2021-2022 Shriners National Patient Ambassador and spent the year traveling the country. Sydney plans to become an occupational therapist and help kids that need extra support in their lives!

Our Third Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2024 for $2,500 is awarded to McKinney High graduate, Sarah Doshier! Sarah’s dad passed away when she was ten years old, and then her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was a sophomore in high school. These hardships inspired her to grow her faith with God and overcome her challenges with mental health. Sarah attends A&M University and maintains a 4.0 GPA!

Our 4th Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2024 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Emily Watson! At age 11, Emily’s mother suffered a very significant personal injury that restricted her ability to work and limited her ability to even be a homemaker. This meant Emily had to step up and assume a much larger responsibility around the home and helping to take care of her mother. Emily now attends Tarleton State University and studies agriculture!

Our 5th Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2024 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Emily Knerr! At 6 years old Emily was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer, with a 96% mortality rate. She received significant treatment and initially overcame the cancer. Just before her 13th birthday, she relapsed. For a third time at age 18, while she was getting ready to leave home to attend the University of Alabama, doctors found another tumor. Emily has undergone 7 abdominal surgeries. She is now a Junior at the University of Alabama, where she is studying to become a Child Life Specialist!

Our Friends of the Firm Scholarship Recipient for Spring 2024 in the amount of $1,000 is awarded to Rose Duncan! Rose is the daughter of Matt Duncan, Burress Law’s original banker between 2008-2012. To this day, Matt assists the firm from time to time as an Executive Vice President of Independent Financial. Matt’s very talented daughter, Rose, has been a friend of the firm for many years and typically sits next to Matt and Jason at SMU Football games. Rose is a graduate of Trinity Christian Academy and is a Freshman at SMU. Additionally, Rose is an amazing artist!

Our First Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Fall 2023 for $2,500 is awarded to Adem Byrdsell!
In 2021, Adem was involved in a major crash and suffered a traumatic brain injury, C5 spinal fracture, bruised lungs, fractured sternum, and fractured ribs.
After the accident, Byrdsell wanted to help underprivileged teems who play sports where he grew up in Liberia. He created "Byrd Basketball Foundation", which is a non-profit organization. In 2022, the Foundation fully sponsored a basketball camp for underprivileged youth in Liberia.
The accident inspired him to study Kinesiology at the College of Charleston, and he plans to become a Sports Medicine Doctor!

Our Second Fall 2023 Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for $2,500 is awarded to McKinney's own, Presley Hazelwood! Presley was born with Arthrogryposis, which affects her feet, legs, and hip. She has endured 10 surgeries, has 9 screws in her hip, and wears ankle/foot orthotics. As a result of receiving such involved, quality medical care, it became important for Presley to help others. She and her parents have hosted an annual golf tournament for years to share Presley's story and raise money for Scottish Rite, the children's hospital that provided her medical care. One of Presley's goals is to become a pediatric nurse and help kids just like her.

At age 11, Sarah was diagnosed with acute lymphatic leukemia which isolated her from all the things she loved such as friends, school, sports, and church. Although she had to endure incredible hurdles at such a young age, she has made the very best of her circumstances while maintaining a positive attitude.
Sarah’s life-changing diagnosis and the quality of medical care she received led her to want to become a nurse. She hopes to build a welcoming environment for patients just as her nurses created for her!

Our Fourth Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Fall 2023 for $2,500 is awarded to Abigail Klein!
Abigail has persevered through and overcome challenges related to mental health. She is planning to become a therapist through her studies at the University of North Texas to improve the mental health of others.

Our First Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2023 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Adam Kurth! Adam has a 3.74 GPA, and is a student at Arizona State University. In High School, he was diagnosed with PSC. During his liver transplant, the surgeons discovered his liver was half cancerous, causing him to endure chemotherapy. A few years later, an immunologist took an interest in his case and performed a genetic test, resulting in a diagnosis of CVID, which requires a bone marrow transplant to cure. Adam had his surgery on December 12, 2022, and although he has a long recovery, he looks forward to eventually earning a Ph.D. in statistics!

Our Second Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2023 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Megan Berger! Megan is a survivor of human trafficking. Fortunately, she was able to escape at 24 years old.
She then went to school and graduated from the EMT program at the College of Marin, and works as an EMT while also doing freelance private investigation work.
Megan also owns a business that provides needed information to the community about crime, safety, and social issues like addiction and homelessness.
Megan is now studying administrative and juvenile justice at Santa Rosa Junior College to better serve her community!

Our Third Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship for Spring 2023 in the amount of $2,500 is awarded to Connor Addison!
When Connor was starting high school, he noticed his eyesight was worsening. He failed his vision test for his drivers permit and within months, became legally blind. Subsequently, Connor endured two eye surgeries in 2018. Though he still has vision problems, the corrective surgeries helped him. Connor is grateful for the vision he regained and we are inspired by how this young man has overcome adversity!
Connor is now studying in finance at The University of Mount Union!

Our Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship Team is passionate about our selection process so that the most deserving students who meet our criteria are chosen. We verify the stories of adversity and perseverance of our finalists. In 2025, our scholarship team carefully reviewed a little over 1,200 applications.
